GP / character power has never been a good indication of strenght, not for single characters, nor for rosters or even entire guilds.
It will never be fair though and one could argue that having a good strenght/gp ratio is just good strategy on their part. My guild is usually outmatched as far as gear goes. We're long term, mostly f2p and very light spenders with inflated GP for LS TB (wich was a good choice at the time). Matchmaking wise that isn't doing us any favours. It is what is it.
