What are allies used for?

Are they used for assisting you in battles vs the AI? Like where you 'borrow a hero'?

Can anyone explain to me exactly how it works?

Also I have 0 allies and I am level 42.

Yep they are used to assist you in battles you manually play (and droid/gold/ability mats event).
If you manually play a battle you will gain 20 ally points (if you have allies). If you don't have allies you gain 10 points, this also counts for 10 if you sim ticket a fight.
You can use these allies points to buy chromium cards, the ones you can obtain for 250 allied points. You also get some free every day, I believe around 5 or something which you can obtain every 20 minutes.
