You can retreat from a treaty, but loose priviledges as well, the separatist were trying to conquer the republic, had an army and made the death star plans, generally they are the worst, only thing missing would be "thought police" and surveillance in the galaxy....

True, but in AOTC, the seperatist leaders on geonosis clearly have early plans for the death star
