Also they seem worse because you're always in a crunch trying to farm them continually so you notice the bad drop-rate days more obviously than the good ones.

I've used the Finn node several times as I'm slowly working on him as a side project. And I've generally found that you get better drop rates if the item you want isn't the primary drop. Works really well on the lower level 6 energy gear etc.
