A Case for a Competitive Ewok Squad

This post will hopefully encourage those of you who are on the fence about investing in an ewok squad to ignore all the naysayers. I made the switch today to a full ewok squad for arena, purely for love of the ewoks and some fun, but I've been incredibly surprised by the fact that they actually work. They are winning battles I used to lose, and although I have a target on my back with them in, it's a blast. Here are the details regarding my shard and team to give some perspective:

I'm on a launch shard, so all the teams mentioned are maxed with good mods. Average speed needed to go first (excluding leader speed bonuses) is 260+. According to swgoh.gg, my average rank is 24 (as high as 1 and low as 60). The majority of teams in the top 20 are:
-Standard triple cleanse (Rex,nihilus,kenobi/r2,chaze)
-Vader, thrawn, nihilus, kenobi, SA/DT
-Thrawn, shore, kenobi, nihilus, TFP/DT
-Jedi + R2
-Few Maul stragglers

My team is:
Zirpa
Elder
Scout (g10)
Logray (3* g10, zeta)
Wicket (5*g9)

Right off the bat, this team is understarred, undergeared, and undermodded. Wickets speed is highest at 219 right now. My first battle was against the standard triple cleanse team, a team I struggled against for months. It wasn't even close, the ewoks smoked them. They targeted elder first but couldn't kill him, and then once I got rolling the heals and health up from logray just kept everyone alive. Took out kenobi first with ease, then Rex, nihilus, chaze. I know all the sheep on these forums have been screaming "ewoks will be Rex fodder with all those crits," but nobody really took into account what the ewoks are gaining per every crit as well. With all the assists available, my ewoks are gaining minimum 20% tm per every crit they dish out on a basic.
Wicket's forest ambush move is amazing too. With each ewok gaining 10% tm per crit, you're actually outgaining every non-clone enemy by 2.5% tm per crit.

Jedi were tougher as they can provide more of an initial onslaught, but I was able to withstand and then take care of business after that.

Maul was mostly easy, but savage proved to be pretty tough to deal with. Had a 5 v 1 against him for almost 3 minutes before Chirpas assist finally did enough to kill him.

The only team I haven't been able to beat so far is the thrawn/shoretrooper combo. Shore is just too difficult to deal with right now, but I'm not convinced that it's impossible. I will ideally like to sub paploo in for scout eventually, and the dispel on basic will be helpful for that team.

Overall I'm very impressed with the ewok rework now that I've been able to try it hands on and I'm not just listening to people who keep shouting "they suck" even though they've never tried them. Worried about not doing enough damage? 5 offense up/advantage ewoks can do some serious damage against any character out there on chirpas assist.

They aren't the best possible team, but they can beat most of the meta teams out there right now.

TL:DR
Don't let negative Nancy's stop you from trying these guys out if you are on the fence. They're fun and undeniably effective.

  • They are arena worthy.
Haven't been able to play much recently, still need to get wicket. It's gonna be fun :)

    Zirpa? How about Chirza?
  • As you mentioned, they suffer from certain particular problems. Zavage is an excellent example. Clones and Phoenix squadron are also, actually, amazing teams, but they come up against a character like Zavage and can't break him. Because instead of toons that can do some massive damage, they have lots of assists, which feeds Zavage with HOTs and TM.

Zylo, also, I imagine you'll have a problem with. Each assist will give him offense and defense and then one hit back not only takes out a character but refills his protection.

And also, as you admitted, you'll be a target on defense, in part because they are so easily overcome on defense. You'll have a problem with Zader's DOTs, especially if combined with Deathtrooper that wiped out tenacity.

You will definitely need Paploo. His dispeller, like Nihilus' is great, and with assists can come into play often.

It's like my clone team under Zody. Seems like it'd be amazing, but there's just certain powerful characters that they don't have the ability to overcome right now.

It's definitely fun. Excited to try when I'm not at work so I can do some battles with the sound on. I know lograys daze move was great on paper, but it's game-changing in battle. Unfortunately I don't know if I can justify getting wicket up to 7 stars right now.

Chirza works just as well for me!

Hmm, forgot about Logray Daze. That might make the difference to my theory crafting above, as it would stop Zavage from gaining TM. Actually, stealthed Teebo should be able to help, too? Though I fear you'll still need a way to overcome Zylo...

  • @Dretzle Zylo hasn't been an issue actually. While everything you said is true about him (eventually they all end up hitting for under 1000 damage), if you leave him for last he never ends up taking a turn once you start on him. Between logray and scout currently, he was getting tm removed often enough and you can time lograys foresight move for times when kylo is about to go.

I've never tried Phoenix and only played against clones in the past, but they do have similar kits. As long as the ewoks keep winning I'll keep trying though.

In my experience with clones (GW) they only have a problem with bulky enemies if the leader is anti-critical, such as Maul or Rex, otherwise they can take out anyone that isn't a super bulky Barriss as long as all five are present

Yep. They can even take out Zylo if it's a weak enough node. If it's node 6 or 9 with a Zylo (broken 11 and 12 nodes), then forget it. Can't do a thing with Zavage or Zarriss. And super weak on defense.

Actually i don't think playing without Paploo is a wise move especially on defense since he's your best asset against every single tank. On defense most ewoks will crash upon a tough tank while being surgically removed one by one.

My only concern about using Paploo is that he would be way more efficient under a Teebo lead, something no one seems to try these days, even if i've always found Teebo's lead really annoying especially defensively.

All that you said above, applies to me. I just did exactly what you did.
Ewok team has great options to deal with large meta powers.

I deal with Zavage a lot of times with my Ewok team. All I did was beat him after Logray´s offense up, multiple attack Chirpa´s Special, and teebo´s/paploo´s/logray´s dispels... Zavage cant stack heal, cant heal himself and dies.
