The great thing about matchmaking it uses x amount of top characters to determine matchmaking. As you play and make better choices, your roster composition will improve.
I understand the frustration, but this mode is about about roster building strategy and execution. Those who work on these items have success.
The unfortunate answer is you're going to have to strategize who you're farming / gearing, do some re-modding, and spend time to understand counters.
As a casual player, that's probably not what you want to hear, but the great thing about this mode you control your own success. You can't just Magoo your way into victories.
