Actually I did that, but I started in December and have a 4-star ship and Bistan for free.
I needed it for some challenges.
If you don't have that, stick with what you already have (Resistance XWing?)
It would be too much effort to level and gear two pilots.

Shoretrooper is very valuable and rare, but you won't be able to farm him as F2P. So how many stars does he have?
If only two stars, it might not be very helpful. With 4 stars, I would give it a try.
