Or maybe you can take a look at the details of the situation and realize the only possible explanations are he was lying or someone else was using his account.

I was at 31, he was at 32.
I tried to engage rank 24 I was told someone was already battling me
I kept trying to enter the fight until the game told me my rank had changed
I was now rank 32, so I sent rank 31 (where I just was as of 5s prior, I know you might think people can quickly do a battle, but not that fast, besides. He moved up a rank, that conflicts with a story that he wasn't even in the app) a message ASKING him to not attack me because it was my payout hour and telling him I'd appreciate it.
I attacked rank 25
I am at rank 25, he is at rank 31
He responds to the message with "what?" so I say again "my payout timer is in 10 minutes, please don't attack me until after"
I go to attack someone at 18, I can't because I'm in battle again
I'm now at rank 31, he is at rank 25.
He replies to the message "what are you talking about?"
I try to explain payout hour to him thinking maybe he just doesn't know how the arena works.
He replies "I know, but I haven't even been in app"
... I mean, do you have an explanation for him telling the truth, messaging me, and his account is not being shared or compromised? Because his squad did move up those spaces. There is no mistake or error there. The squads swapped ranks and he was moving up ranks which would only happen if he, or someone else, was on the account playing.
