Are droids ever going to be able to stand alone?

I know droids have been in and out of the meta but it seems they have always relied on non droids. Wether it's Poe or poggle in the old days or most recently jawas.
Droids are far from relevant now. Their last bit of usefulness was in p2 of the AAT raid. Most don't even use them for that anymore.

    Who's the last toon to be as useless as GG is currently? answer.....darth maul. enough said!

    R2 being a droid also could come into play here. I wouldn't be shocked when GG does get a rework if they also reworked R2's zeta so that crit hits would cleanse droids too. Imagine that?

    We know Jedi will be the meta when jedi luke drops, I wouldn't be shocked if it was then droids dethroning them in early 2018.
