Only Lead Zetas (in the Lead slot, or the ally slot -from the borrowed hero in some PVE content) abilities persist for the remainder of the battle once their toon is defeated
They have always worked this way, it is not exclusive to Barris.

You're forgetting about Old Ben's unique; there are others.
Padmés stop, DRs stop, Trayas stop.
What do you mean old Ben's unique? His unique states when he dies his allies get buffs for 2 turns. After the buffs are gone they dont reapply

Apparently, Barriss' unique did use to endure but was "altered" (pray they don't alter it any further) in 2017.
It was a bug and it was fixed. Unique are not meant to persist after death.
