I would argue that Phoenix never become really useless. Sure they don't hold up in squad arena, but neither do most units. They're still a necessity for Thrawn and Chimera, they're really useful for Emperor Palpatine, they do well in territory wars and battles, then can do well in certain phases of raids, and they can easily clear GW daily.
If you want to pass on all that because they can't hold top 10 in arena, be my guest.
