Okay, so, when your target dies from a damage on time, even if it was from one of the bounty hunters, you don't gain the bounty reward and you can't gain it for all the rest of the battle ?

Correct, the active character is "damaging themselves" so it doesn't count towards the contract.
Not sure why they dont give them a memory, but might be more difficult than it sounds with the way the game is coded.
