Well lets do some math... If he has 50k protection and gains 5% whenever he gets a buff he would gain 2500 per buff under Jyn lead. He also has a 97.6 counter chance and taunts (buff) 75% of the times he gives damage and 100% if he has a buff already....
Starts with 50k protection
takes dmg of 20k - (down to 30k protection)
Zeta moves his max protection to 50500 (1%)
he counters causing a taunt and gains 2525 protection (5% of 50500)
but each time he takes dmg he gets 1% of current max so it would increase theoretically as follows
50000
50500
51005
51515
etc etc
but that is with one buff...say yoda has offense up, foresight, heal over time and advantage and uses BM...
K2 would receive offense up, foresight, heal overtime, advantage, and tenacity up and under jyn lead would also recover 25% of his protection...or say after the above 4 attacks 12878 protection...
So what we are leaning toward is a new rebel meta Jyn lead, K2, Baze, Chirrut, and cassian Andor...
I mean if k2so has 5-6 debuffs (say against vader) Chirrut special equalizes health removes all debuffs and gives one heal over time for each debuff dispelled...meaning 5-6 or 12500-15000 protection...thats without the zeta...K2 will be key if used with the proper team..meaning if you have a team that can spread and generate buffs he will be darn near invincible.
5's on Ster-droids
Nobody is complaining about Jyn's lead ability, and not even about K2's basic viability (althoug I have my doubts; it'll depend a lot on Cassian Andor). It's just his zeta that seems pointless. You math out his max protection, but if he's getting hit, he isn't at max protection. So he doesn't gain 500, 505, 510, etc. protection. He gains an ever decreasing percentage of that. And given that chars hit for a couple of 1000 damage each, even if he did gain the max every time he was hit, it'd still take about 6 hits before he negated even the shittiest of hits (e.g., an RG attack) with his zeta'd ability. And 6 hits is already rather a lot (hell, I'm happy if my tank can survive about 1 round of attacks, let alone without losing all his protection). Lets say you run with a buff happy team and get 1 or 2 buffs per round, that's 5 or 10% protection back, the zeta will still be completely negilgible. You already calculated that it'll add an extra 25 protection after 1 go. Lets assume those 6 hits actually happen and he then gets buffed. The zeta will add all of 154 extra protection (over the base protection gain, assuming 50k base protection). That might as well not exist. Even if you manage to get hit 6 times, survive and then get buffed 10 times in the rest of the fight, you will have gained an extra 1540 protection from your zeta (plus the max ~3000 from the percentual increase of your protection wrt max protection when you get hit). So in an absolutely ideal scenario, the zeta seems to be worth about 5000 protection. That is completely miserable.
Lets face it, +10% flat protection would be far far better than this zeta, and it would still be incredibly mediocre for a month of farming.
