Do we actually need these teddy bears?

Nothing has been confirmed, no. But they talk about unlocking Commander Luke being his journey, mirroring the steps Luke takes in the trilogy. Luke doesn't meet the Ewoks until long after he's ever referred to as Commander, so I personally don't think it's likely that we'll see them as a requirement for him.
I would suspect that they'll continue on this hero's journey to the eventually reward us with yet another, more advanced version of Luke (Jedi Luke? Old Luke?), which means the Ewoks are still likely a worthwhile farm for later down the road.
There's also the possibility for another event not related to the release of Commander Luke that will require a squad of Ewoks, so plan accordingly.

A month before Luke's journey begins and they're bombarding us with ewoks. New ewoks, events with ewok shards (forest moon ends -> new forest moon starts ) etc. I don't know man, honestly, maybe it's just coinsidence but... it seems to me that when those little rascals are going to be needed for Luke and people will get angry the devs will say "Hey we kinda told you so".

And they'll have right to say that!

So even if there's a sliiiiiight chance they are needed, if you really want Luke, farm them.

My experience with this game has taught me that, if you want to stay ahead, getting a 5-strong team of each faction is always a sensible move. I would not be at all surprised to see an event in the next few months that requires 5 Ewoks.

it's a marque event, so i doubt it that you'll need them for luke.
if it turns out you do, they'll become easy to farm.

Honestly, they almost certainly wouldn't make them required for Luke if they're just being introduced to the game right now.

Its Ewok faction pass and honestly, i do not think, they are required for luke (yet) .... but i think, you will need 5 of the Ewoks ready to get the 7th (Wicket).

Also doubtful. Unless they change things up completely, the upcoming marquee events are going to get us a 3* Paploo and Logray. They'd need to make at least one if not both of those characters farmable before they could expect us to have 5 at a decent star level for a full squad event. And the release cadence means we won't see them become farmable for a couple months.
Even with Thrawn, the PS was around for a few months. It was only after they became farmable (and after we were given a week + double drops) that the Thrawn event took place.
Then again, people are saying the Wicket event is going to be something somewhat new. So I'm making sure I farm Chirpa (the only one I don't have 7*) on the double drop days.
But every other day is devoted to finally getting Old Ben and Luke to 7* first.
