As a preface to this post, I'm not making it to garner the sympathy of folks on this forum (although I would appreciate your support if you agree with my conclusion below, if not that is okay as well)...

@SirDave314159 anybody who takes a break would be doing so knowingly that they will lose ground,
What's happened here is the the same result but as consequence of a bad algorithm or an unforseen matchmaking issue on part of CG.
Taking a break, even if unavoidable and losing ground on/in an ever expansive game is fair (that's an obvious consequence)
Paying a premium to play a freemium (for an edge or to stay competitive) and doesn't take a break to then get royally shafted and to find oneself at a large disadvantage isn't fair.
I see it as an unfair change in the terms at which I invested my hard earned.
