Stars affect the amount of stats increasing from every level up. At level 1 character has absolutely no stats to begin with, so nothing will happen. If your strength for example is 1 and it gets increased by 10% it will still be 1 (it will be 1,1 but game turns that into 1 because only even numbers are counted). At level 10 the base strength can be 16 for example, and when you get a new star it will be increased by 10% which will make that 16->18 which is a big difference already.


Edit: and another example to make sure it is understandable.

1* Character at level 1 has:
1,2 strength =1. At level 20 he has 24 strength.
0,9 agility = 1. At level 20 = 18 agility
1,1 intelliqence = 1. At level 20 = 22 intelliqence

2* character at level 1 has:
1,4 strength = 1. At level 20 he has 28 strength
1,1 agility = 1. At level 20 he has 22 agility
1,3 intelliqence = 1. At level 20 he has 26 intelliqence.

Hope this helps, so at level 1 stars are useless, but the more levels your character gets, the bigger the advantage you get from stars is :)
