You are not going to use level 1 characters anyway so I really don't see what is the problem here, your characters will be much stronger thanks to extra stars after you level them up. You have not wasted the star, not at all :) You just need to level them to at least level 2 and they will be stronger than without extra stars. You can level up your characters from the character page by clicking train and then clicking training droids.
