I just fought a hermit yoda battle and he was the last one at the battle and he automatically died.

Yep he dies when the last man standing, that has been stated in his ability.
Not useless just hasn't found his niche yet. Currently seems like a gimmick much like zombie, but maybe after the jedi faction rework he will have a good composition around him. - Troll?
