The difference is combination of choices and RNG. A Human player has far more flexibility in making choices, giving a smart player the edge against the AI.
I have beaten fleets up to 18k higher than mine. At that point there was a significant amount of RNG luck involved but had I not had a good fleet and made good choices I would have lost for sure. That same fleet with 20+k advantage had previously wiped the floor with me every time.
I regularly beat fleets 10k or so higher than mine with a combination of good fleet composition, good choices and to a lesser extent RNG. Those same fleets turn around and beat mjne when they are player controlled and mine is AI controlled.
10k-30k I have no issue with that because that's to be expected. But 50-100k less is another story.
