I would recommend it yes. I wrote a guide on this very process that you can view on the website in my signature. Or you can watch the video version of it below.
There are a ton of advantages gained from knowing what you are doing when you first start playing and rising to the top from day one.
However, if you spend money on the game, don't put it towards chromium packs. Buy the dark side starter pack, a crystal subscription and possibly a crystal vault as well and put your crystals to work in pushing your early level / resource advantage.
