Newbie, where to focus

Hi Everyone,

I started playing this game about 2 weeks ago and I have no idea what I'm doing.. Basically I'm just grinding the daily activities and try to get as many blueprints as I can. In the arena I'm pretty much stuck around rank 1600 for a while now and collecting new characters is sloooow. So I want to make sure I go for the ones that are really worth it.
This is my current collection: https://swgoh.gg/u/angeloonie/collection/

I'm currently going for Chewbacca, Jedi Consular as upgrades and for Mace Windu, Savage Opress, Ackbar, Boba Fett and Old Daka as new unlocks. Is that a good plan or am I overlooking someone that is fairly easy to get and still good end-game?
  • Collecting every shard you can is a big no-no in this game unless you're a whale. To be competitive you must focus on a few toons at a time. About toons you mention only Boba is a sure bet atm but he requires a lot of expensive gear. You can also focus on a faction rather than specific toons. Rebels, empire, jedis are good atm, nightsisters, jawas, tuskens, ewoks are not. You will need 5 scoundrels for the credit heist which brings lot of cash.
Right now I would start over if I were you, just to get a high rank from the very start in arena. Check the top ten prizes , it's worth it : use crystals to refresh energy twice a day, cantina energy once, rest to buy gear. You can find guides on forums, reddit, lordskunk.com, youtube. Get a swgoh.gg account and a nice guild asap. Or just play the way you like if you don't care for competition, and have fun.

But that's exactly what I'm asking, I don't know what to focus on so I'm asking here which one I should be getting. I'll keep going for Boba and I read that Old Daka is still good endgame too.

I have around 3 mil+ at the moment and I don't see it going down yet. I have no idea if that is a decent amount or not.

I don't exactly see how starting over would help (if that's even possible on the same account). I'll just lose everything, but what do I gain? How does it help in Arena to be a level 1 again?
I'm not going to be ultra-competitive but would like to keep improving myself.
  • the first Chorm pack you get, is set up to give you a character. Many people, will restart new accounts over and over, until they get a good first character then move forward from there.
it helps in arena, because again, it will start you over, and in a new shard. arena shards are built 1-20k people. after they hit 20k, a new arena shard starts, and people will fill that one. So what this allows you to do, is
    a. get a good character ( that will be good end game )
    b. refocus your arena squad, to be something very competive and retain the top 1 - 10 slots.
3 mil, is not really a lot, because once you hit 50, you will start leveling mods, and those, cost a lot. the high the rating, the more it costs to upgrade. there are many guides here, that will explain to you how to farm out mods and get the best for your credits ( teachs you which ones to level, and which ones to just sell to not waist credits )
  • I looked at several guides and have a bit of direction now. Yet I'm still struggling to find the right team with my current characters and I don't want to waste energy or materials on characters that I shouldn't be using.

At the moment I'm level 54 and I only have 1 character at Gear Level 7 (but some close). In the Arena I seem to be stuck at the #700 mark as the difference in power grows a lot (my squad: ~13.7k, their squads: 15k+).
GW is very easy, I can do all challenges and events on the highest difficulty and I farm mainly these characters:

    GW:
    - Biggs
    - Luminara
    Cantina:
    - Lando from battles (73/80 so very close now)
    - Boba Fett from store
    Arena:
    - STH

My main squad at the moment is:
    - STH (lead)
    - Jedi Consular
    - Boba Fett or Kylo Ren
    - Biggs
    - Wedge

But I also have Darth Sidious, Daka, Phasma, Dooku, Vader, Ackbar available. I'm just struggling to find a good allround team for the Arena, especially once I have Lando: who will I drop, Wedge?

You can see my current collection here: https://swgoh.gg/u/angeloonie/collection/

The guides all have different opinions and I'm struggling to find the most suited for me.

  • Hey fellow newbie here. I'm only a level 45, so probably not the best person to give you advice but I'll just input whatever I've learnt from the guides and help out as best as I can.

I think the issue you are facing right now would be that your resources are spread thin because you are focusing on too many things at the same time. As what JKToole mentioned above, focusing on collecting many characters' shards isn't advisable, especially if you are F2P. What you need to do right now is to focus on your best Arena team (best 5 characters), and stick to it. By that I mean just keep farming the shards and gears for those characters until you get 7 stars and max gear at your level.

Now the main question that I think you want answered is what is the best possible combination that you can get with your current pool of characters. So this is where my limited knowledge might not be very helpful, but what I know is that the Rebels are pretty good right now. So a team of Wedge (L) - Biggs - STHan - Boba Fett - JC would be your best bet. Once you get Lando, you can drop JC (but only when your Lando is sufficiently leveled and geared). At least that's what I'm aiming to do right now. Another way to know roughly what's a competitive team out there is to take a look at the top 50 players in your shard. So if you find a certain lineup in your shard that's doing well in the top 50, then by all means you can follow what they are doing as they are a pretty good gauge.

So overall, my advice would be
    1) Focus all your resources on farming and gearing your best Arena team of 5, which is Wedge (L) - Biggs - STHan - Boba Fett - JC
    2) Once you've gotten Lando, leveled and geared it sufficiently well, replace JC with it.
    3) Seeing that you are level 55 and about to reach 60 soon, you could read up on ships. There will be an arena for ships as well and you can at least get a "fresh" start with respect to ships.

I hope what I've said is useful!

I have to admit that even though I'm way more focused than in the beginning, there's indeed still too many characters I'm focusing on. Partially also to make sure I have enough characters to play all the challenges/events. But right now I have quite a bunch so you're right that I should focus on my best 5-6 characters.

Cheers, basically that was already the team I'm aiming for so I can just keep going for that. Although I'm still doubtful about STH being the tank, he dies quite fast.

    1) I am doing that now but I will do this exclusively from now on.
    2) This is ofcourse the exception on 1), I have to get Lando, and materials for him :)
    3) Thanks for the advice, I have a bunch of ships already and I will make sure I focus on the good ones only so I don't waste anything. :)

    Cheers for the advice!
  • Yeah, when I first saw events/challenges that I couldn't participate because I was lacking certain characters, I also felt tempted to get those characters otherwise I thought I might lose out because I couldn't get the rewards from those events. But I realized that I'll only be competing against people of the same shard as me, meaning people who started around the same timing as me. So if I do not have the characters, they most likely do not have it as well. Which brought my focus back to farming my arena team only.

One thing I saw a lot of people are talking about is the credit heist event, and I was very confused about it as well. Because as a newbie I couldn't understand the magnitude of the credits, 2-3 million seemed a lot and it doesn't seem like I would run out anytime soon, since it's mostly used to either upgrade my characters or to buy shipments. But after I joined my guild and saw them discussing about the cost of mods, that's when I realized a good mod can cost as much as 2-3 mil. Hence a lot of people are saying to focus on getting a scoundrel team to participate in the credit heist event. That's where the bottleneck would be in the future, with credits being the "limiting factor".

I agree with you, ST Han doesn't seem tanky at all when I started using him. But after that from what I read, the reason why ST Han is good is because it allows your other teammates to gain Turn Meter while he is tanking (taking damage). So it is possible for the rest of your team to have two turns to take out one/two of the enemy before they even have a chance to have their first turn, thereby weakening their squad by a lot.

    Glad I could help! :)

I remember that I also had trouble using STH in the arena when I was around lvl 50. I ended up having better luck with Royal Guard until I could get STH up to gear level 8.
STH and Lando are really valuable because they are tagged as rebels and scoundrels. Due to this, they have far more use in good events: the emperor event, credit heist, training droid heist, crit chance mod challenge, tenacity mod challenge, military might assault battle, and omega battles.

You haven't mentioned Guilds at all, but don't forget to farm Teebo from GW to do well in the Rancor raid! You don't have anyone with turn meter reduction yet, and that starts being a major hurdle to overcome as you approach level ~70 and have no gear for anyone.
  • Thanks for all the advice :)

I'm in a pretty active guild but I can't join any of the raids yet unfortunately, but I'm getting closer and closer. :)

Right now I'm using crystals to refresh my energy to farm materials for gear ups. Lando is at VII, and I'm now very close to doing the same for STH.

In Arena I now use Lando, STH, Biggs, Wedge and JC, and it's working pretty well if I make the right choice in opponents. I found a 4 level lower opponent with Empire characters (Sith Trooper, Death Trooper, Sidious and something else) and got completely annihilated haha :P
