So I have some google play cards laying around and up till now have thought the chromium packs too random to use my cash on... do you think the new booster packs are worth it? seems less random anyw...

No! No way. They give you RNG crap for gems you could spend on energy refreshes and other good things. It cannot even give you a full character. If you value your gems even a little do not buy them.
