Thanks for the perspective. I finally beat it by just retrying. I could probably have beat it a long time ago if I knew that the key was rolling the dice a lot of times, rather than building good characters.
Seems strange that they make it so hard that it isn't feasible to build a team strong enough to beat it. (Especially since the other events were easy to squeak by as long as you had a team that met the basic requirements.)
