Sysy, I am with you on everything you said.
I also disagree with the person that said arena is the key mode. Sure, you get the most crystals from it but the real meaty rewards are those for the top 20 and f2p players are not going to be in that level if they have whales also in their bracket. Thus, focusing on the GW and beating it every day will give far greater rewards for the average f2p player than just trying to get to the top in arena which is a hopeless cause.
I am pure f2p and have played since December 3rd. In my bracket, I finish under 100 (yesterday was a new best of 34) and I feel that trying to get into the under 200 or even up to 500 finish should be the goal and sweetspot for f2p players (at least for the time being...may start to drop down the line) and they should focus on being able to complete gw every day and get their 1200 gw tokens and all the other stuff that you get. It'll surely help build the team quicker than just being an arena hound. I mean it is simple math: 15 shards a day for finishing GW or most likely 10 shards (if you finish sub 200) in arena. GW also gives six figure credit amounts which you of course need for everything in the app.
Furthermore, just focusing on the arena team will most likely hurt you in GW where focusing on a solid overall roster for GW can build up a very good arena team given many of the solid GW characters like Lumi, Poggle and Phasma are in those shipments.
So for me, the smart play is to make GW the priority if you're f2p.
I have completed GW every day since I learned there was a retreat option and I have finished top 20 in Arena (including a best of 3) for the last month. For GW I only use 5 heroes. 4 of which I use in Arena.
