I think part of my problem also is that I never refresh my battles. I do my 5 and done. I think many people are now doing 10 fights and so of course they are leapfrogging me. I may just need to accept the 50 crystal cost and hope I make it up with better finishes.
That said, I don't think I have enough 7* to make it to the top 10 any more. (My best ever finish was #3 a couple of times, behind whales that destroyed me in 90 seconds.)
50 crystals is a no brainer when you move up 1 rank or more. I spend 50 crystals almost every day, and it is the difference between finishing 6-10 or 1-3. It is a ni brainer: 400 to 500 crystals -50 for refresh, or 200 to 250 crystals. That's not an expende. It is an investment
