Until the TE answers, just my experience as one who followed the guide (and managed to be Rank#1 again today).
I bought 2x Mod packs with crystals and received a decent 4-dot-critdmg mod for slot 2 with 26 speed, and some speed mods. So that can be a source for good mods. However, not 5 dots yet.
Also with lvl 57 or so I managed to do the speed mods (one even 3 stars) until 8-E with the help of lvl85-friends as supports. So my STH is 4x speed modded with quite low level, and therefore I go first and can win a lot.
I did that when Lando landed 7 stars and now I am free to go for GS, which is now only 4 stars.
I still have not any char on 5 stars, only 4x 7 stars (Lando, Biggs, Boba and STH) with now lvl 62.
