Who to give gear to?

My current main arena team is:
Lumi (lead), Leia, Rey, GS, RG, all at gear VII

I am thinking of transitioning to:
AA (lead), Leia, Rey, Lumi, RG (or perhaps leave GS in and switch out Lumi).

However, my AA is understarred, his abilities are underleveled and he is still only at gear VI, so I don't think he's ready yet for that role. However, I don't really know whether AA is really going to fit in the team properly in any case (he deals less damage than Lumi, let alone GS), but the synergy with both Leia (rebels) and Rey (dispeller and Tactical Genius for horrible damage).

So now my dilemma is whether I should give gear priority to Ackbar to get him up to snuff, or to RG, given that they both use almost the same gear. I won't be able to get RG up to gear VIII for a while (not even at a level where I can yet), whereas I expect I can get Ackbar to VII over the next 2 or 3 days.

And this ties into a broader question: should I generally focus on making my current arena team stronger, or focus on trying to build my "ideal" arena team at the cost of current strength?

  • 2nd option but, I'd look at the SWGOH.gg meta reports and think about some tweaks, there's a pretty effective rebel meta out there right now but it's not AA and Leia.

I don't know how competitive you want to be but as your shard develops PVP goes from you being able to win with lots of different characters to less and less being relevant.

Depending on your payout, it's usually a better idea to sacrifice current performance to get where you want to be IMO.
  • Yeah. I am working on Lando, and will start STHan, but I have RG and he is still very effective, so a tank is not all that high a priority right now. Thanks for the advice on gearing! :)
  • Well, Leia also gets extra attacks from AA's Tactical Genius (and if ever applicable, It´s a Trap). And with Lumi gone, there isn't another leader skill that is at all worth it. Leia could give herself and AA crit chance (and eventually Lando, if he goes into the team without replacing Leia), but RG, GS and Rey don't have leader skills.

The reason I like AA with Rey, is that Tactical Genius allows Rey to Leverage and Flurry in a single turn. I wish AA was faster so he could go before Rey, but getting a regular attack in on the first turn and ohko'ing someone in the second turn is usually okay. Especially as it heals her if she got attacked at all. Add the minor synergy between AA's dispell and Rey's Focused Strikes and I like the core of AA+Leia+Rey. RG is currently far and away my best tank (I have a 3* shore trooper which isn't geared at all, and I have a 2* scariff pathfinder, also completely ungeared), so he goes in the team too, leaving the final slot to play around with. I have Old Daka, GS and Lumi at a level where they are playable, but none have true synergy with the first 3. Lando seems the best fit, but still gearing him, and he is also only at 4* (Cantina farm is a long slow grind), I could also put in QGJ (also undergeared and understarred).

Anyway, I took the initial advice and got AA to gear VII. The next Holo Projector and Droid Caller will go to RG, but to get him to gear VIII, I'll also need another 41 pieces of Sensor Array salvage. Quite the farm :/

  • Honestly, I would quit farming AA immediately and start on sth. Keep working on Lando. Then work on Wedge in cantina and Biggs in GW. Until you get the Wiggs combo, you have a perfectly good team that can maintain top 20 in Lando (L), sth, RG, GS, Leia (or swap out Leia for Rey).

The reason I say get to work on sth over AA, is because sth can help with the credit heists as well. Very good and versatile character. STH is the premier tank in the game right now.
