Zeta Mats (Fleet Shipments vs Ability Challenges)

So, like many of you, I've been wondering if it's better to get zeta mats from fleet shipments or to upgrade my ships faster. Unlike many of you, I'm an obsessive math nerd, so here goes. (this line was meant as a joke, please don't take offense)

THIS MATH IS CURRENTLY OUTDATED DUE TO INCORRECT ASSUMPTIONS, PLEASE SEE MY POST AT THE BOTTOM OF PAGE 2. I'm not interested in hiding my mistakes, so I'm going to leave this post to keep the flow of conversation in a state that makes sense.

Currency Gains:
GW: 1200 / day = 12 blueprints / day
FS: 1300 / day = 13 blueprints / day
Other Energy: 1 blueprint / day (I think this is optimistic considering my drop rate, but ymmv)
~26 blueprints / day

We need 8 5* ships to get zeta mats from challenges. That's 145 blueprints per ship, for 1160 blueprints total. I currently have 272 blueprints between my top 8 ships.

(1160-272) / 26 ~= 34 days to get all the necessary blueprints, spending FS on blueprints.
(1160-272) / 13 ~= 68 days to get all the necessary blueprints, not spending FS on blueprints.
Therefore, spending FS on blueprints gets you 34 more days on the ability challenges.

(34 / 7 ) * 3 * 2 ~= 29 attempts
This means that if you're spending FS on blueprints, you get 29 more attempts at the zeta tier ability challenge.

That may sound like a lot, but the method spending FS on zeta mats has had 34 days of spending zeta mats. In that time frame:

(34 * 1300) / 2000 = 22.1 zeta mats.

So, those of you whom are maxing ships first are essentially trading 29 attempts at zeta mats... for 22 zeta mats. Of course, this math changes if you have more blueprints than me. I only bought two ship packs (and would trade back both of them...).

tl;dr: If you're F2P (or even a dolphin with similar blueprint count), and it makes more sense to just get the mats.

  • So as an update:

1/19 marked the first day I did not finish in the top 10 for arena payout. I have since failed to make top 10 twice since then (though one of those days I didn't play). Almost a straight month of getting into the top 10, whereas before I was getting into the top about 1/week.

Today I finally unlocked the zeta tier of ability mat challenges (and 3*'d it). I feel this was actually rather later than I could have, as I spent literally over a week waiting to get the last 8 shards of Slave I since I had all of the other ships ready to go. Rather frustrating to watch 3 rounds of the challenge go by...

At this point, my fleet is:
5*: Slave I, Wedge, Biggs, GS, TFP, Sun Fac, Ashoka, FOTP
    4*: Poe
    3*: RP

I admittedly delayed my results by switching to Poe from RP, but I could not get over how buggy and poor of a ship RP has. RP's ship regularly fails to proc TL (or doesn't display the resist message), is resisted often even when it does proc, has mediocre damage, and I have *never* got her daze to chain (let alone that it's not really worth the action anyways).

I lucked out with Sun Fac showing up in guild shipments, but I think this was more than counter-balanced by the poor luck with Slave I and switching to Poe.

For fleet arena, 1/19 was also the first day I placed in the top 20. It was also the first day my fleet arena rank was better than my arena rank. I regularly place in top 20 in fleet arena now.

The biggest difference wasn't the quality of my ships, but the * of my flagship. Getting Home One to 5* was what made the difference. I would regularly run out of steam against opponents with their extra reinforcement.

I'm still struggling to figure out an appropriate second zeta. I'm looking at Finn (G10, with all Resistance already at G8-10), Vader (have EP/TFP/Boba already, but would need to gear Vader), and Yoda (hesitant, because most of the time the added Foresight would be wasted).

My current arena team (all G11 with appropriate mods) is:
    ZQGJ / JKA / Yoda / EP / TFP

Empire teams are generally a joke. Droid matches are a toss up. Really I need a sub for Yoda vs Wiggs teams. Wiggs teams tend to run very few debuffs, and Yoda's greatest utility is keeping Tenacity Up on my team most of the match. I may try Shoretrooper. I am also slowly unlocking GK.
  • Thanks for keeping us up to date! Glad to hear you've 3*'d the challenge. I'm just stuck on that blasted 5* tarkin battle. My dark side squad is all the GW ships, with toons at 3-4*, G7-8. It's just not cutting it. Would you guys recommend adding Slave 1 or Scimitar, or just gearing up what I have? Neither ship nor toon is unlocked for me.
  • The Slave I and Scimitar are both fantastic ships for Fleet Arena. I'd highly recommend switching over to investing into one of them, over the weak GeoSpy.

GS / FOTP / TFP / Sun Fac are all excellent ships. However, you need to keep in mind what toons you are willing to invest in. Ideally, you want to be investing both in the toons and the ships for maximum efficiency. It's why I picked Slave I over Scimitar, as I was already invested in Boba Fett.
