Wording matters. If you've ever played a game like MtG you know the wording on the cards is incredibly deliberate. The game should hold itself to the same standards. The argument shouldn't be "it works that way cuz the devs said so". The argument should be "if the devs want it to work this way, then make the wording reflect that"
very few abilities in this game every work as worded
every ability that does damage and applies debuffs all start with deal physical/special damage then do debuff thing
Most debuffs are actually applied before the damage is done.
