I just had the same issue, in the rear trenches, level 4 of 6. Cant attack, auto does nothing. I forced closed and reopened the game but it got stuck on the loading screen with the spinning circles.
iPhone 6s with latest iOS, on 4g LTE full signal

Mine also got stuck in the loading screen for awhile but it ended up working after a minute or two.
