From what I've seen, this happens when your opponent sets no defense. Works like this:

No defense set
Match starts with no defense, you get max score
Opponent sets defense with Edit Defense planner
Those defenses now appear as if they are live
UI bug allows you to attack them but the battle errors out since the opponent actually set no defense

So yes, this is a bug, but it's caused because the opponent didn't set defense, which is on them.
