Grand Arena opponent had no defenses set

I went to attack my opponent in the Grand Arena and they didn’t setup a defense!  This is disappointing not being able to play the game and I thought EA was setting up the auto-deployment of defense to stop this issue of having no defense to attack!???  So, what happens do I automatically win and how can I progress in the Arena when this keeps happening? 😒😡🥴
