They disappeared for the battle until I force closed and reopened the game. They have not disappeared since but it was disappointing that it happened in the first place. Do you have an explanation why this occurred in the first place?

Cases of buttons disappearing tends to be mostly technical issues on the local device which can happen for a variety of reasons. As a result a bit of troubleshooting performed on the device usually helps the buttons to return again which you've discovered yourself when you performed a restart. 🙂
