As for the time expires issue, did the battle end in a Draw as a result?

In regards to the wrong opponent, that should never happen, since you will receive a message that the rank of the selected opponent is no longer valid when you are attempting to battle someone and someone else took his place before you were able to initiate the battle. The ranking screen should then be properly updated.
