Doesn't help with your current situation, but I recommend setting at least one defensive squad in the future.  This guarantees you some points.  

The simplest way for the game to determine participation is likely "points vs no points."

    I would use jkray's suggestion of setting at least one defensive squad. Unfortunately, I do believe you need at least one banner to get rewards. If nothing else, set a fleet on defense. If you want to go to the feedback section on the forums, you could suggest they consider logging battle attempts as participation.

    If your guild struggles to get 25 players, have you considered joining another guild?
