The Sims series wouldn't exist without the pioneering masterpiece that was The Sims, but it wouldn't have survived either if the sequels had not been able to top it off.
I think we would be very unfortunate if a 20 yo game with the least funding, programming experience and community feedback of the 4 was the best of the series. Like series killing unfortunate.
