The Sims 2 Rerelease - Disappearing Sim

So I've just been playing with the recent re release today and having loads of fun progressing with a single sim household with one cat.  I had gone to a community lot with the sim and was heading home when I got stuck on a loading screen.  After waiting forever I finally decided to force quit the game and restart it. Now when I click on the household I have the cat selected while my sim is in the taxi outside. I cannot take control or select my sim, their icon is gone. The taxi leaves and after a few minutes the police show up for my cat and say that this pet no longer has an owner.

Is my Sim lost forever?
