I got into the game and started adding downtown, vacation spots and business districts etc. for about 15 minutes. I finally selected a family to play and the game crashed while it was loading. I relaunched the game a few more times and tried different families in different neighborhoods, but it crashed everytime. The game is unplayable.

I have the same problem - I used to have the "Direct3D returned an error: D3DERR_INVALIDCALL! The application will now end." error, but now that the most recent patch released, I am now getting a more generic error "The application has crashed. The application will now terminate." It always happens when I try to load a family. It is unplayable. Photo attached
The same for me as well, worked fine until the update.
Has anyone resolved the issue? I have not gotten the game to play :(
My workaround was to turn off shadows under Graphics Options from CAS mode (the option is greyed out from the Neighbourhood screen but not CAS).
If you load up CAS, then click the 3 dots to bring up the options menu, then you should be able to bring up the Graphics options to turn off shadows. Apply the changes, then return to the Neighbourhood screen. I have then been able to load families as normal.
Unfortunately this workaround resets EVERY TIME they update the game, so I've had to "refix" my broken game each time they publish an update. I found it mentioned on another thread on here. But at least the game is playable!
I am having the same issue where the game crashes when trying to load a household, but unfortunately this fix did not work for me.
Has anyone found any other resolutions for the issue? Unfortunately EA has been no help whatsoever and directed me here.
What is CAS mode...because my shadows graphics was greyed out as was suggested.
