#BnS212 - Settlement for SimanityThe deadline for this challenge is 31st March 2019“Please, come in,” you say, gesturing for your two guests to sit.
A well-dressed woman hands you a business card which says ‘Settlement for Simanity’, and identifies herself as a Ms. Abby Jung. You know the organization but have never worked directly with them.
She is accompanied by a gentleman with the kind of impressive beard and friendly face usually reserved for Santas. He is dressed more… not casually, exactly, but you can tell he’s much more of a hands-on type, with a firm, calloused grip. He introduces himself as simply Tepeu.
“Thank you for seeing us without an appointment,” she says.
“Not at all,” you say. “How can I be of help to your organization?”
“Well, that’s an interesting question,” Tepeu says. “We are looking to create very small homes which can be cheaply and quickly erected, but still be functional for places where whole communities are in need.”
“War zones, natural disaster areas, displaced populations, that kind of thing,” Ms. Jung says. “These won’t be our idea of a house with so many rooms and possessions and furnishings.”
“No,” the Tepeu agrees. “These will be places for sleeping, food prep, and storage mainly. The important aspect is that the family will be in a good, solid structure which can provide safety. A door which locks. We take such security for granted but it is lacking in many areas of the world.”
You nod, remembering some of your own clients who so desperately needed a home after some kind of disaster or another. “I would be happy to be involved in any way I can.”
Tepeu breaks into wide grin.
“We have few requirements, mostly we are hoping you will be able to connect the dots for the actual design of the building,” says Ms. Jung as she hands over several briefs.
“The need is so wide-spread,” Tepeu says. “There are many climates and cultures which Settlement for Simanity will build for, so we are hoping we can get a variety of designs, while meeting the basic needs.”
“Of course!” you say, already having visions in your head.
THE BRIEFBudget: 8,000 for build only - do not consider the cost of the lot

LEVEL: let's try intermediate, but I don't want to be the only one in my category...
LOT SIZE, ADDRESS & FINAL COST: 10x10, I placed it in a custom world "Chelsea's Heart", downloaded from exchange, because there are a lot of empty lots there. Final cost $8200 (lot cost $200)
LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: tell us about your build, include any details and rationale that might not be obvious from your pictures
CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM: "yes"
CREDIT TO SIMMERS FOR CUSTOM CONTENT USED: I used only stuff from the official game, and purchased downloads. Actually, the exchange listing says I didn't use any purchased items, just expansion items. The world I used was "Chelsea's Heart" by Sovaz

I apologize for the lack of formatting and links, I am a new member.
It also seems to be clipping my "OFFICIAL ENTRY FORM #212" top line out of my response.
AdvancedSince I'm not sure I'll be able to finish the optional challenge, I'll throw this up now and edit later one way or the other.

LOT SIZE, ADDRESS & FINAL COST: 40x40 in Aurora Skies - replaced 45 Lupin Lane
Build-only cost: $8,000 plus $3,200 for lot, total: $11,200
Optional lot cost: honestly I lost track, I was upgrading the appliances so it was heavily depreciated. Probably still less than $50,000 though.
LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: Inspired by Nordic living, this home promises a safe space that can be built quickly and cheaply in a subarctic environment. The exterior is a traditional black, while the interior uses light colors to help the space feel warm and welcoming. The lot is situated close to town to allow easy access to the library, school, town hall, and more, and to allow the residents to feel like they are truly part of the community.
The house utilizes a crossed A-frame style with open floor plan to reduce wall costs. It has a single bedroom that sleeps three and a half bath. A covered porch holds a stack of firewood, the mailbox, and the garbage can. The entire roof is covered with solar panels to generate all the power needed for the home, and a fireplace offers additional warmth (modlet!).
A number of skill items have been included. In addition to the stove (cooking), there is a bookshelf (various skill books), a radio and hacky-sack (athletic), a mirror (charisma), and sketch pad (artistic).
Some special touches include a custom name-plate near the mailbox, extra seating for having a friend over, a desk for homework, a chest to store items, and curtains on all windows for privacy.
Upgrades: the toilet and sink are unbreakable, the fireplace is fire proof, and the stove has improved meal quality. Fully play tested to ensure all items are usable.
Optional Challenge:
The other three houses on the lot are recolored to shades of red, yellow, and gray exterior so no one gets confused which house is theirs!
The other layouts offer a double bed + sleeping bag, two single beds, and a single with crib. The color schemes were altered for variety but aside from the beds they all contain the same items.
The lot offers each house its own corner with pleasant walkways and landscaping for a sense of privacy, an entry area for bikes, and a pleasantly situated pond. A common greenhouse and orchard gives the residents a means of supporting themselves and supplementing their diets with fresh vegetables. Family friendly areas include large playground, grills, picnic benches, a kitty pool, games, and sprinklers to play in.
There are lamps placed around the area and fences enclose all but the front of the lot to help keep it secure, and gates give access to the back of each house where the electrical boxes are.
Though their misfortunes left them in need, this lot will give them a chance to build a new life with new opportunities.

LOT SIZE, ADDRESS & FINAL COST: 36 x 64 (House is 9x3 w/ 4x2 deck); 1580 Memorial Parkway; Final cost was 8,000 for a single house.
LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: So I chose to use dense urban as my inspiration. I wanted to build something that was easy to move and could be put up almost anywhere. So I chose to build a tiny house. I tried to make this one as fun and freeing as possible with a focus on how the houses function as a community. I wanted to create a place that people crashed into each other and drew support and inspiration from each other. I wanted it to feel artsy and youthful. I hope you enjoy.

LOT SIZE, ADDRESS & FINAL COST: Individual yurt on a 10x15, $7,993 excluding $300 lot cost. Custom placed lot on the Area 52 Test Labs side of Lucky Palms on Lakeside Drive.
Community of yurts on a 50x50 custom placed lot next to the single unit (I did bulldoze the empty 50x50 next to Lovely Lake Park and Playground and place another one further away from that park but on the same side of the road.) I didn't check the cost of this lot before I put in sims to test routing, but it's around $58,000 now.
LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: My yurt residences are on the small side, both because by adding even one wall space on each of the eight sides the budget would have been blown, and also because think it would not have still fit the 10x10 space requirement. Staying on the smaller side also allowed the use of a little better appliances - the stove, fridge, and shower are all better and more pleasant to live with than the cheapest variations offered in the game.
The original yurt was placed on a 10x15 lot with everything fitting in a 10x10 area except, I think, the mesquite bush, which I considered "foliage." I did count it in the lot cost, though. The total for the single lot was $8,293, the lot itself being $300, so the unit's cost totals $7,993.
To create the larger community option, I placed the original yurt at the center back of a 50x50 lot, with four additional units, two on each side of a central community garden. At the front of the lot are several covered areas for community use, including a laundry, children's play area, and a picnic area. In a back corner, there is also a small bit of space used to accomodate pets - there are two dog houses (my experience is a cat will sleep in one), two food dishes, a couple dog and cat toys, and a cat scratching post behind one of the dog houses.
The use of roofing over the outdoor areas is to create shade in a hot climate. Other nods to climate include the placement of a rainwater collection system, and HVAC units for each individual yurt. I also did include sprinklers in the garden area this time (these sims have enough on their plates with being displaced, afterall, and don't need to spend all day in the hot sun watering plants ;) ). The only upgrading I did was to send in a sim to make the sprinklers auto water.
Each unit sleeps two. While I wanted to vary the sleeping arrangements, the "you may reCASt for variety but cannot change anything beyond that" statement in the assignment caused me to think I shouldn't do that. There are two basic colors for the exteriors, a teal and a sage green, with three door colors used. The interior wall colors all match the exteriors. Fabric/upholstery colors and patterns are varied - and maybe some other small color change was used - for each unit, but except for a couple similar-cost differences in what's on the kitchen shelf or the choice of alarm clock on the dresser, everything else is exactly identical.
