Rebecca Keller (New Arrival on the Way) When Rebecca figured out she was pregnant, a sudden rush of misery washed over her. It wasn't the thought having a child that bothered her, but the fact she w...
Rebecca had made it clear to Kris that she wasn't pressing him for more, but that still wasn't cutting it for Kris. In the Service he had been the 'go to guy' when things needed to be done, and he was having a hard time adjusting to the differences in the Real World. Any job associated with his previous work would undoubtedly take him away from his family more than Rebecca had indicated she was comfortable with. That meant he would be starting fresh at whatever he chose to do.
It was becoming distracting again ... The constant gnawing in his gut. He couldn't express how much he enjoyed being there with the two of them ... But the thoughts just kept creeping in. Rebecca wasn't making it any easier ... She was working and doing just as much as him at the same time. Sure ... it was understood that Kris would try to keep them in fish and food is kind of a necessity ... But Rebecca was earning, and Kris was fishing.
Rebecca's sister Marcy and her husband Cal had a decent business building bots at the Carlisle Research Center. Kris hated to ask, but he had to find something that would be flexible in hours, and something he could work on at his own pace coming up to speed. To his surprise, Cal was kind of excited about the offer and agreed to give Kris a tour of the facility and get him started.
Kris was smart in business and international affairs, but he wasn't as fond of science. It didn't hold him back through and he was soon advancing through the basics in bot building. Trying to use his time wisely and pushing for results, he brought some nanites home with him to Reverse Engineer. Rebecca was typing away in the corner, and Kris was working on a nanite while waiting for Hanna to wake up.
Yeah ... It didn't go well. Rebecca checked to make sure he was okay, and she didn't want to frustrate Kris any more.
"Sweetie ... These things happen, and it's happened to me before. If it's what you want to do, then just get right back to it and try again. Maybe in the basement though ... You don't need to wake Hanna up or scare her to death."
Kris was okay with the working part ... Not so okay with the getting shocked part. He called it quits with the nanites and figured there had to be something else. If nothing else, he could get some thinking done while catching dinner. Kris thought out loud at times ...
"Looks like we're having lobster tonight, dang this water is cold. It's getting late too, and I should probably start heading home if we are going to eat these at the regular time. Maybe I should be a Commercial Fisherman ... Although I don't see that not taking up a lot of time and we would be eating about half the catch."
That evening after dinner, it was his turn to watch Hanna as Rebecca did her workout in the basement. He admired her talent at writing and didn't think he could even come close. Still ... He had time ... He could play games, chat with someone or try to write something. Hanna was having a blast with the doll house and didn't care daddy was talking to himself.
"Well let's see ... See spot run is obviously taken so I'm going to need something a bit more original ... Hmmm.
What am I writing about ... Where does Rebecca get her ideas from? Life ... She writes about her life experiences but not in a direct or autobiographical way. If you write about something you know, there is less research involved. What do I know ... I know her ... I remember Cairo ... Maybe there is something in that. What did she say ... Just open up, feel your emotions and let it flow."
Kris started a few times and backspaced shaking his head ... Then something clicked and he took off on the keyboard. He glanced over at Hanna from time to time ... But time became irrelevant. The minutes passed, and soon he was a hour into his work ... Hanna was giggling like her mother and didn't mind playing by herself at the moment. Kris just went with it ... Taking himself back to Cairo.
Rebecca finished her workout and showered before heading upstairs to the day room. Kris was typing away when she turned the corner. Normally he would have had Hanna dressed for bed by now, but Rebecca didn't mind. She crept behind him and scooped up Hanna trying her best not to disturb him. He glanced back ... "Sorry Becca ... I'll get that, just let me finish this thought."
Rebecca had been there before, and it might take more than a second ... "I got this, just keep going and I'll put Hanna to bed in a few ... No problem."
Rebecca took care of Hanna's nightly duties and finally got her down and resting if not asleep yet. That little monster would talk until she just fell over and passed out. Hanna's head started weaving and Rebecca knew it wouldn't be long ... She walked up behind Kris and read over his shoulder.
"Mmmm ... Dang Woman ... You smell good, all fresh out of the shower and everything. Here I am thinking about Cairo, and if you don't back off there might be sparks."
Rebecca did back up, and Kris had lost his train of thought ... Soon they were just standing there, both wondering what was coming next. They had been taking it slow ... And staying just out of the range of the fireworks that had brought them together, and Kris to Hidden Springs. It was Kris that finally broke that ice ... "My mind is already halfway to Cairo ... But my memory might need a little refreshing ... You know, for the story"
Rebecca just smiled ... "Uh-huh ... Just for the story huh? Come on mister man ... Hanna is down for the count ... Let's go mess up the bed."
