Of course caring for family and providing for the future (kids' college fund, retirement, etc.) has to come first, but I don't see that DISPOSABLE income spent in the Sims 3 Store is any worse than any other way to spend it.
My husband and I have no children (we joke that I have him and he has me). We have a household budget with a certain amount of money that each of us is allowed to waste, guilt-free. That amount is larger than when we were young and poor, but we have always had some. We call it the "toy budget" and it is money we can afford to waste after bills and savings are all taken care of.
I think it's good, and saves on needing mental health professionals and psychiatric drugs later, for working people to be able to have a few things that they just WANT. Even if your toy budget is $5 a month, you should get to spend that money any way you want, guilt-free, and it should be on a little luxury for you alone.
I don't spend my whole toy budget in the Sims Store, but it would almost be better if I did. I have a doll room, but even with a whole room if you have ENOUGH dolls things get filled up. Space in your house, being finite, is like that.
Thank God for the Kindle because we were going to start drowning in books. Have you SEEN those "horders" shows?
The wonderful thing about virtual goods is that it isn't something I have to buy a new cabinet for, rearrange a set of shelves or drawers to store, or fret about whether or not I'd better keep the box (and find a place to store THAT as well).
And, yes, space on your computer is finite as well, but you can always buy more memory.
