Box of Mystery mysteriously switched owners

I'm playing a premade family where the mom is a magician and the dad is a singer. The mom started at level three of the career, so she had the Box of Mystery in her inventory and used it in one of her shows. However, after that show, the box disappeared from her inventory, and I eventually found it in her husband's inventory. I can't switch it back to her because for whatever reason I can't just drag back, and I can't have her put it in her inventory because the game doesn't consider it hers anymore. Only her husband can use it, except that he really can't because he's in the wrong career. I can't seem to find it in buy mode, so I have no idea how to get it back in her possession again. She's not doing very well in her shows, and I think losing the box might be the cause. Does anyone know what to do?
  • That happened to me once a while back. I think what I did was had the magician quit their job for a day, saved and quit the game, and then after starting it back up, I had the sim who quit their jor reapply for it. The worst thing that should happen would be that your sim will start at a lower point in their career, but it should not be by much. But they should get their Mystery Box back, but I would also suggest making a copy of your game save before doing this, just in case it doesn't work out this way.

If you also have world adventures installed, don't travel with those boxes in the inventory or you may get a bug that duplicates them every time the game is loaded. I just learned all about that one in my game. Never seen the bug that transfers them into another family members inventory...yet. Did you try placing it on your home lot, then dragging it back to her inventory? In any case, glad you found a solution that works for you.

The same goes for the Fire Trucks. A while back I was playing a Fire Fighter, and she also had the LTW of things dealing with World Adventures. I wasn't paying any attention to her personal inventory, but before I knew it she had 6 fire trucks in her inventory. So I tested it one more time, and after she got back she had 7. lol After that I sold off the extra trucks, except for two, and kept them parked at home whenever she went on a trip.

I did. I couldn't drag it into her inventory because she no longer "owned" it. I couldn't select "put in inventory" with her as the active sim for the same reason. The game would only let her husband use it.
  • I just happened to think of something, this glitch you encountered might be a good thing, possibly. What I mean by that is normally when your magician quits or retires, the box will vanish, I always hated that part. If you don't mind, please keep us updated when he retires or quits his job if he keeps this item, since he is not a Magician.
  • I don't play the family that often, but I'll try to update you on what happens once he retires, but it might take a while.
  • Sorry to necro your thread, but I hope it is okey since I found suggestions of fixes, should it happen again.

I did try to recreate the problem when you posted, with the Singh family in Starlight Shores; but were unsuccessful, and the box could not be moved into Matias's inventory by me, so I did not post anything.

But in another save this happened:
with a family, where the toddler had gotten a IF in the mail that I immidiately placed in the grandmother's personal inventory (I am not fond of the dolls); I moved to another world the EA phone-way, and upon arrival the doll was placed in the toddler's personal inventory (and also named by the game to a word I have used only here on this forum in PMs, so the little IT-clown just got creepier).

I tested if a regular reset would do the same: placed the IT/IF in grandmama's inventory, went to Edit Town, split her from the household and moved her in directly without exiting ET - and when back in game the clown was back in the toddler's inventory. Hurr. Wishes are lost when evicting.

Anyway, I guess the official ownership is the ground for the mechanism and that it perhaps would work the same for the box, it belonging to the career and Priscilla, even if it is stuck in Matias's inventory.

When I tried to recreate the problem and after Priscilla's first show, that I made Matias accompany her to hoping that the box would switch owner's; the box instead got stuck in her inventory. I used the reset above to loosen it.

When trying to solve another problem with the box, I found that placing it on the lot, saving, exiting the game, don’t clear cashes, start the save again - made the game place a duplicate box in the personal inventory of the magician. It does not happen every time. I am not sure it is a recommendable way of getting an extra box, since doing the same thing when travelling (WA), like said above, starts a chain of events you cannot stop - unless there are two boxes placed on the home lot already (and presumably none in inventory of Faustus aka the traveling magician  )

I found that Priscilla's performance on stage, even with the box, was very bad, and I levelled her up to level 6; so I think that her traits, as well as lack of good ones for the career, like Natural Born Performer, and the LTR Engaging, contributes to that. Carl's has a good guide on the career:

    https://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/careers/showtime/magician.php?cmtx_sort=1

I have played the career once before, and the sim was doing very well, she had traits Ambitious, Charismatic, Natural Born Performer, the LTR Engaging, as well as others, and I followed the tips in the guide.

I am looking forward to your, eventual, update on the box, it is a very interesting magical object
  • This fix seems to have worked. The box is back in her inventory. I haven't gotten to a point where she's done a show, but hopefully, it will stay this time, and she'll have better luck with her performances. The only downside is that she was at level 6 before she quit and is now back at level 3.
