If I remember correctly, your sim has to have a grade of at least a B to get to pick your trait. It's been awhile since I was able to play Sims 3 though. The only negative I remember of doing poorly besides not getting to pick their trait, is that sometimes they will get detention and have to stay after school longer when they go.
