Crashes Due to "Max Memory Used" according to the Crash Log Analyser.

Currently experiencing a number of crashes due to "Max Memory Used" as per title. My PC specs runs any of the most recent games including AC Odyssey with no problems. I haven't played the Sims 3 for sometime and thought I'd get back into again (not a fan of Sims4). I have tried the following to rectify the above issue that's currently bugging me to no avail:
* Changed the ini and sgr files to enable more ram (I have 16gig, set the ini to 8gig) and the sgr file and gamerules.sgr to enable Sims3 to recognise my GPU.
* Changed the DEP settings with Sims3.exe and Sims3w.exe as exceptions.
* I replaced all spiral staircases with ordinary ones.
* I'm using NRass Overwatch, Tempest and many of the ones I used to before and yes, they are all fresh downloads to my game version.
* Deleted all cache files.
Despite above, I'm still having issues with either CTD's or the game freezes up and doesn't thaw out. Although there's a lot of info on this topic, much of it is very old. Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Brief PC Specs
i5-8500
16g Ram
Windows 10
GPU Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti
  • I'm afraid there is still quite a bit of conflicting and outdated information out there about this game.

TS3 is a 32-bit application only. It cannot possibly use/address more than 4 GB of RAM, actually the absolute upper limit is really 3.7 GB due to some overhead. There are no ini or sgr settings that can change that, the one that is still commonly referred to in that manner does nothing for actual RAM usage and its default value is 20 GB anyway (commonly misread as 2 GB and this is a measure of the theoretical upper limit to the script heap, not RAM usage). I also would not recommend changing DEP settings, EA fixed that issue with one of the patches somewhere in the 1.50s I think it was.

If your system has plenty of RAM to use, and it certainly sounds like yours does, the goal becomes keeping the game's usage under the danger zone that begins around 3.2-3.3 GB or so (this will vary slightly by player and system), not finding ways to get it to use more as those will never be successful. According to the Task Manager, how much RAM is the game actually using, in MBs or GBs not %s, once it's started up with the game clock moving forward smoothly, and again after say a half hour to an hour of gameplay if you are able to keep it running that long? Which world(s) are you playing and do you see a big difference if you startup a new test game in one of the gentler to play worlds such as Sunset Valley, Riverview, or Twinbrook?
  • Thank you very much for your reply. Currently using a new CAW world I created but the crashes also occur on Starlight Shores and Moonlight Falls. Since I last posted, I took a look at my current save which was 3.6gig. A little large I must say. I trimmed that right back (after googling what I can remove) to 71mb and the game runs smoother and saves in just over a minute as opposed to 20minutes.

Task manager informs me the game takes up about 2.5-2.7 gig of ram (after alt tabbing) though I guess the crashes may occur if the ram usage spikes, maybe unrouteable sims/pets/animals. The crashes don't concern me too much at the moment due to the speedy saves but would much prefer no CTD's. My most recent CTD was five minutes into the game but my previous playthrough was flawless clocking in at about 2hrs. It's hit and miss. Out of interest, can memory errors also be caused by unrouteable sims with the game exceeding it's memory limits trying to address the issue? As previously mentioned I do use numerous NRASS mods to help with various issues.

I will try Sunset Valley or Riverview and see how things pan out. My lot count on my new CAW world is about 170. Not wanting to exceed that. Again, I greatly appreciate your help.
  • I think you are onto something there, both with your formerly bloated saves (it's the individual nhd files within a save that should be checked for outrageous file size by the way, but 3.6 GB sounds huge for one individual game save no matter how it's measured) and with routing issues in your currently being played world potentially being heavy contributors. Very heavily populated worlds will also do this, especially if any form of story progression is running as it tries to manage what could be far too many sims all at once. MasterController can be used to get a quick reading of the resident population, on City Hall NRaas > MC > Demographics > Population > "X" to dismiss the filter. It's the Resident number that would be important there, not Service or Homeless unless you for some reason have those in the high hundreds or thousands.

What can also help control resource usage are playing offline (meaing not logged in at the Launcher or in-game levels), disallow the in-game TS3 store shopping experience, disallow the hidden object startup game, switch off scrapbook memories or use a mod to control them.

The more or less complete list of NRaas mods that are designed to improve things in this regard would be Overwatch, ErrorTrap, Register, Traffic, to an extent GoHere, Traveler (if any form of world travel is invoked), MasterController (for an occasional Reset Everything run from City Hall). I can't imagine playing long-running ongoing games without these in play to keep things moving along smoothly.
