Chapter 1
"As the sun set, I sat on the stool drinking my juice. I was pondering something. Why couldn't I just be a normal kid? Why a ghost? Joey, my imaginary friend (and the only friend I had) lay on the ground. 'I wish we could be human.' I said. 'Yeah,' he sighed, 'but maybe you shouldn't have played with your dad's alchemy stuff. You should've learned from his mistake.' 'I didn't know it would lead to this,' I answered, 'I just want my old life back.' 'At least you were real once.' Joey said. I sipped my juice again. 'Well,' I said, 'school is starting soon. I haven't been to school since before I... died. Maybe I'll make some more friends, who don't judge me because I'm a ghost, like the neighborhood kids do.' 'At least you get to go to school.' Joey replied, 'You have it better than me.' 'I just wish we could be human.' I said again, 'Maybe there's a way...'"
