I've had my screen get stuck and in the past and I've given up and pressed ctrl alt del thus losing quite a bit of progress. Sometimes the problem was so bad the task manager wouldn't work and the only way I could get out of it was by logging off :(
So, one day, distraught at the thought of losing my progress yet again I just started hammering the F buttons and, to my amazement, it worked. F1 and F5 (maybe F6) seemed to be the relevant keys but they didn't just work first time, all the keys needed to be pressed multiple times and eventually I got a result.
Depending on which of the keys has an effect a message pops up asking if you want to save or you go into Buy mode, if I remember correctly. I've had to do this a few times recently and I've been so relieved when it's worked.
So, when things get so desperate that you've nothing to lose by trying, I'd suggest spending a couple of minutes trying out the F keys.
