How to prevent burglars?

In big families, I never seem to get burglars no matter how long I play. I wondered why for a long time, but then I realized that they only come when everyone's asleep. So if I have a sim with a late work shift (chef, musician, athlete, etc.) who stays up most of the night, the burglar can't show up. Even babies who are awake in their crib seem to prevent a robbery, and since they only sleep a few hours at a time, their sleep schedules rarely synch with the rest of the household. I guess they make better witnesses in TS3 than in real life.

Aliens don't ever sleep (teen and above) so they coincidentally prevent burglars as well. There was another life state I recently played which never slept and so would prevent burglars from appearing.....mummy I think it was.

I once had a self-employed sim with the Night Owl trait. He worked from early evening to ~6am (inventing) and slept until noon. Never had burglars in that household.

If your sims have the heavy sleeper trait , they will sleep through the burglar alarm

I was under the impression that if a specific scenario like the burglar one calls for a Service Sim (a burglar), that the game will spawn one even if the service pool category is set to zero. But I haven't tried this myself, I only very rarely see burglaries anyway, so could have been mistaken.

I tried this when I first installed Register and I still got burglars so you are right.

put a gate around your property and if you don't mind using the cheat, use move objects on cheat and put those alarms right in front of the fence, on each side the door is on, and don't forget garage entrances, you can put those alarms inside the garages, near the garage door.
Because some burglars are sneaky & will use that to get in if its not protected.
When you use the cheat those alarms will be suspended in the air, and as soon as a burglar passes that point it goes off.
If its just outside the fence your sim won't even hear it.
As soon as the alarms go off the police come.
Using Nraas MC I just reset them, they go into oblivion and my Sims sleep on through the night. Sometimes I even do it to aliens because I don't want my Sims abducted.

I'll have a chat with team about changing the name of the mod to NRaas SanitySaver. It does have a nice ring to it, but fear it would be too easy to confuse with the Saver mod that already exists but performs an entirely different function. ;)

Burglars, one of my least favourite NPCs after zombies. I suspect this has a lot to do with being robbed in real life. Very distressing.
Bearing in mine I don't use mods I do the following to minimise the risk.

Get a burglar alarm. This is one of the first things my sim gets when they start earning.
Lock the doors and limit access to the house.
Pounce on them. This action doesn't always appear but if you wait for the police to appear the burglar and your goodies will be long gone. I don't recommend this course of action in real life but this is the sims and as far as I know none of them have ever died of the shock of being robbed. Besides I have the memory of my hubby in his dressing gown, armed with a golf club, slashing at bushes in the garden long after the burglars had scarpered. Both funny and tragic in the same moment :)
Insurance and if the worst happens don't replace the tv, buy the burglar alarm instead, your sim can live without telly for a few days :)

I always put the burglar alarm out side the front door. I find only one alarm is adequate for my sims homes. Burglars do turn up and wake the household when the alarm goes off, but they rarely get anything - and they almost never turn up so when they do it's mostly just a bit of entertainment that lasts a few minutes and probably won't happen again for a long time.

I've read that having a dog in the household will actually increase the chance of being burgled. Not sure if that's the case but thought it interesting. But I have noticed being burgled with a dog in the house, but haven't kept statistics on it to know if the dog has any affect on it.

One time one of my Sims was getting robbed, she had the alarm and the police came, but the burglar beat the police up & he started running away. He had taken a very expensive painting (over 2,000) and I wasn't letting that happen. I made him part of the household, took my Sims painting back & Kept resetting him over & over again. Then I changed his traits, made him clean the toilets, then kicked him out.
