I'm sure they always have. The problem is how times change and what will make the people outraged and what won't. They thought using "insane" for a trait name was safe, but got backlash on that so it was changed to "erratic". There is so much "awareness" and "sensitivity" these days that almost everything needs some sort of a warning or just be avoided completely. People can get so spooked over possibly triggering someone, insulting someone or the like that you have to either walk on eggshells or accidently unleash the angry mob that is suddenly silenced by "the highest authority" among them to tell everyone to take a deep breath and act like nothing happened while also shutting the entire topic down.
Well, finally after all this time they were given enough feedback and demand to the point they say, "Hey, maybe it is safe for us to bring this back and not be lit on fire or walled off inside a pool for it."
