I created a Harry Potter world, not sure how to go about playing Hogwarts.

As the subject says, I created a Harry Potter world and was wanting to put a lot of Sims into Hogwarts to create a realistic atmosphere. I did a test run so I wouldn't mess up my game. I made Hogwarts an apartment, but I was only able to put 8 Sims in it. I went to put a group of Gryffindor's into the Hogwart's apartment, and it wouldn't let me saying it had the max amount of sims on the lot already. So, should I just make it a community lot and hope for the best? How do you guys recommend playing it?

  • I'd make it a community lot. Probably a school of some kind. Do you have Lunar Lakes? I have used those tiny little futuristic community buildings before and built the building I wanted around it. Did a very modernistic police station and city hall once and put the tiny community bldgs. in a basement under it. They seemed to function okay. (I wasn't sure how else to do it).
  • Thanks for your ideas. I do not have Lunar Lake unfortunately. I think I'm using Hidden Springs, but I can't remember for sure. I made it a community lot and put it as a University Hangout since the description online said that putting it as a Uni Hangout it would be open 24 hours. That way people can sleep there, etc. I just wish it could've worked as an apartment complex, would've made things a bit easier. I'll just have all my sim young adults in their Hogwarts attire and see how it goes. Again, thank you!
  • If not averse to using mods, NRaas MasterController can be used to Add Sims to community lots (with one setting change required first). They will then see the community lot as their home lot and the Greater Than Eight barrier can also be broken. That can be done on a residential as well, but it will all be one big household either way.

Do you know offhand what setting needs to be changed to do this, Igazor? I have had trouble populating my Fraternity in the past. I did eventually find a work-around... but no longer recall how I did it.

NRaas > MC > Settings > Allow Add Sim on Community Lots

To get past the restriction on household size,
NRaas > MC > Settings > Allow More then Eight

The only (somewhat) goofy thing is that sims who are Add Sim'ed to a community lot so that it acts as their home will actually own it. Kind of silly for a runaway to "own" the playground or beach for example, if that's where we are having them stay, but it doesn't cause any real problems that can't be worked around. For actively played sims though, there is the lack of a mailbox to consider. :)

Yeah, I'm not a mod user, wouldn't even know how to use mod's as I never have used any. Thank you for the suggestion though. I'm thinking having it as a hangout will work out just fine. I can go to the Edit Town to switch between active households etc.
  • Maybe I'm not understanding exactly what you are planning, but if "regular" sims in a defined household intended to be world residents in your game (as opposed to homeless NPCs there to perform services or staff role giving objects like maids and cash register attendants, etc.) do not live on a lot assigned to them, they become homeless and are subject to wandering out of your game. Without mods, the lot they live on must be a residential type.

Basically I wanted Hogwarts to seem like the school as far as being able to see staff members and students wandering around, eating, sleeping, reading books etc. So I made the lot a University Hangout which was described as having that lot open 24 hours. So Sims can be there all hours of the day. There are bedrooms, kitchen, eating area etc. Since I couldn't make it residential I am making houses for all the characters (Snape, Dumbledore, Prof Sprout, Trelawney, the students etc.) to live in. So all the Sims will have houses, but, they will still be able to visit Hogwarts as a community lot any time of day. I hope that makes sense. I didn't sleep worth beans last night and I'm pretty darn tired. :)
Also, since I kind of want certain sims to wind up together, I can switch from the current active household to another household, that way I can play each family etc. That is what I meant by switching between active households.
