I've never tried the short life span or any of the longer life spans but have started a game with the long life span.
With a normal life span I often have my sims travel to the 3 WA worlds and/or to university to work on skills, to accumulate lifetime happiness points and to get the 25 acquaintances before meeting many people in the home world. When my sims age up to teens they always get a trip on their own. Since time stands still back in the home world it's like getting some free time.
I play with relativity set to 25 so that time is running at about 2/3 speed. Things that would normally take an hour of sim time take 40 minutes of sim time. I do pause the game though and queue up actions for my sims.
